curriculum vitae

This page is far too self-centric and sounds to boasting for my taste, but those are the projects with which I've been involved with

I was born Andreas Happe on July, 7th 1982. While my education started within the arts my father's influence soon brought me into the field of computer science in which I've stayed the last 15 years

There are many different areas within computer science and I've worked in many of them. I've finished many pure business-oriented projects but my largest (and still ongoing) appointment is a key position developing quantum-cryptography based secure communication networks: it's hard to get any more cutting-edge than this.

I am a advocate of flexible working arrangements. I do not believe in fixed working hours which are filled by unproductivly surfing the internet. A reason that I choose being self-employed is that this allows me to work at peak efficiency.

Software engineering is a craft and an art: I've mastered the former (certified by the Technical University of Vienna) and accept the latter every day.

Personally speaking, I am very fond of music, books and movies. In my spare time I like to travel the world: new experiences are the best way of keeping one's creativity. I should also mention caffeine and Starcraft II, both of which I'm addicted to.

Current engagements

Starseeders
Co-Founder/CTO
since 2009
Starseeders is a conglomerate of software developers and designers which focuses upon web 2.0 development. We plan on making our arrangement more formal during the next year.

Projects include day-by-day web projects as web shops, but also various long-term projects within the business collaboration area. For further information on those projects please visit the Starseeders homepage.
Austrian Institute of Technology
Software Engineer
since 2009
Since the successful conclusion of the SECOQC project I've been a core member of the AIT software development group. In addition to the further development of the network components I am working on device drivers, management interfaces and end-user visualizations.

In short I am working on the commercialization of quantum key distribution networks.
Technical University of Vienna
Student
since 2009
In addition to my finished master studies in Software Engineering I've taken courses in "Informationsmanagement". The only missing part is the final master thesis which I plan to complete as soon as I have spare time on my hand. Which might actually be never.

Former engagements and education

2008 - 2010
Co-Founder and CTO
Blackwhale GmbH
During my final years at university I've cofounded a software startup with three colleagues of mine. We focused upon international web 2.0 projects, mostly done with Ruby on Rails.

After university and HTL have shown me the craft of programming these years have taught me insights into it's art.

Alas our shared vision diverged and instead of straining friendships I've decided to leave the company in 2010.
2006-2009
Software Engineer
Austrian Research Centers
I joined the SECOQC project in 2006, it's goal was to develop a multi-company network based upon information-theoretical secure links encrypted and authenticated by quantum derived cryptographically-secure keys.

I wrote most of the project's network software

The final presentation during the SECOQC conference was a success, one key paper (which I co-authored) was actually slashdotted.
2002-2010
Student and Tutor
Technical University of Vienna
After my mandatory year of social service I've wanted to dwell deeper into the software development world and choose the Technical University of Vienna for this.

I finished my Bakk. thesis on "Software Object Systems" in 2006 and continued with a master studies within "Software Engineering and Internet Computing". Its master thesis on "Provenance on Rails" was accepted with distinction in 2010.
2001-2002
Social Service
Pro Mente Austria
I've chosen to work with behaviour peculiar children but have also written a patient management software which is still in use.
1996-2001
Pupil
HTbLvA Villach
I attended the HTL's branch for computer science and economics and finished with distinction in 2001.

The schools curriculum was evenly divided between computer science and economics. As experienced later during my university years both of them were top-notch. I've learned more about the craft of software development in those five years than in the following years at university.

During my term I also had to do multiple industrial-placement summer internships, I chose the Austrian Telecom and Infineon. During those internships I got my first taste of "real" systems-programming (C, VMS, Fortran) and business management processes.
